Overview of Lead-acid Batteries And Lithium Batteries

A lead-acid battery is a battery whose electrodes are mainly made of lead and its oxides, and the electrolyte is a sulfuric acid solution. The lead-acid battery is charged and discharged through the chemical reaction between the active material on the positive and negative electrodes and the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte.

A lithium battery is a kind of battery that uses lithium metal or lithium alloy as positive/negative electrode material and uses non-aqueous electrolyte solution. The negative electrode material of lithium battery is metal or lithium alloy material. It relies on the initial transfer of positive electrode and negative electrode to complete the charging and discharging operation of the battery.

Energy density refers to how much energy a battery can store in the space and weight of each battery. Lithium batteries have a much higher energy density than lead acid 

batteries. The lithium batteries have 3 to 4 times more energy density than lead-acid batteries, so in the same volume, the lithium batteries will be smaller and lighter than lead-acid batteries.

Batteries are also similar to solar panels in that they degrade over time and become less effective with age. The cycle life of lithium battery is 2000 cycles 100% DOD at least while lead-acid is only 300-500 cycles. Taken together, lithium battery’s price-performance ratio is 4 times of lead-acid battery.

3. Lead-acid Battery VS Lithium Battery: Are They Safe?

Lead-acid battery contains hazardous substances that can harm users and the environment. Lithium battery has been rigorously tested for safety and won’t explode even if struck hard. Lithium battery can withstand high temperatures of 60°C, has a thermal peak value of 350*500°C, and still, releases 100% when heated to 350*500°C. The high temperature resistance of the lithium battery ensures that the lithium battery can be very safe when encountering high temperature during use.

4. Lead-acid Battery VS Lithium Battery: What Are Their Discharge Characteristics?

As shown in the graph below, when evaluating lead-acid batteries versus lithium-ion batteries, we found that the voltage of lead-acid deep-cycle batteries dropped significantly under load and discharge. Most lithium-ion batteries are 95% efficient or higher, which means that 95% or more of the energy stored in a lithium-ion battery can actually be used. In contrast, lead-acid batteries are closer to 80% to 85% efficient.

The lead content in lead-acid batteries has caused significant environmental and health concerns over the years. However, 5% of lead-acid batteries are not recycled. As a result, millions of metric tons of lead are dumped into the environment, causing greater environmental damage.
