According to a press release released on Tuesday morning, the Northwest Regional Government and the federal government are investing $40 million in Inuvik wind power projects.
The territorial government invested $10 million and the federal government invested $30 million through the Arctic energy fund.
With Inuvik's natural gas contract coming to an end, the government touted wind power as a "priority" Inuvik wind farm, and the funds will be used to install wind turbines, a power grid controller and a large battery storage system, it will provide energy when the wind slows down.
The money will also be used to build a 5-kilometer road from the demurst highway to wind turbines, as well as to connect the system to the local power grid.
"This is a great opportunity to be an innovator," said Inuvik Mayor Natasha coolicowski . ".
Kulikowski hopes the wind farm will lower the price of electricity in the region.
Electricity and heating fuel are the two biggest cost of living in the north, she said.
"Whenever we have new opportunities to see new ways to reduce these costs, [it's important]to]

According to apress, the goal of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help protect the environment.
