As generators emit carbon monoxide, they ask you to take key safety measures, including running the equipment at least 20 feet from any structure.
But in an era where we can charge smartphones with battery packs packed in pants pockets, shouldn't there be an easier way to restore power after a storm?
Or, say, power the camp without constant gas buzz
Fuel generator?
This is the promise of a portable power station, the so-called battery.
Inverter generator.
Essentially, they're super-large rechargeable batteries.
About the size of the countertop microwave-
You insert a typical 110-
Top socket Top off.
When on duty, you can safely run a portable power station inside because it does not produce any emissions.
They have enough ability to power some small household appliances in a short time.
There are many different outlets (
Standard 120 v socket, USB port and DC charger)
You can also charge the electronic equipment with the station.
In order to increase the charging capacity and extend the running time, these devices are usually equipped with portable solar panels.
"These generators have no smoke, and there is little noise on all the models we test," said Dave Treza, test engineer in charge of consumer reporting generator testing.
"But if these power stations are dead and you can't use solar panels, you can't charge them.
You can't use another gallon of gas.
"In our portable power station rating, we see models from the brand, including target zero, Humless, K2, and Kohler.
Some companies, such as target Zero, sell these portable power stations as the perfect place for apartments during the storm (
Not single.
Family home with yard that can accommodate generator).
How do we test portable power stations in the lab, and the CR test engineer evaluates five key measures for rating portable power stations: operating time, power supply, power quality, ease of use and noise.
To test the runtime, we run a constant of 300-
Simulate the Watt load that powers the TV and several lights.
We also connect each battery to one side. by-
Next to the fridge, see how long it can last.
The best model we have tested is to charge the refrigerator for 44 hours at a time (
The worst is only 13 hours).
For the extent to which the model is able to maintain the voltage when it is given different load tasks, we have used a variety of devices, including 1 kWh 2-
10,000 horsepower submersible pump-
BTU air conditioning.
We also judged the noise output and found that as a category, the batteries were quiet: All the models we tested were given an excellent score for the noise.
Below, our experts share some of the pros and cons of using portable power stations.
Find out how the most popular models perform in our ratings and check out our generator purchase Guide to compare portable power stations to other types of generators. 1.
They can't provide as much power as they can with gasoline generators.
If you want to power a stove, a ceiling light, or anything else in your home that is hard wired, a portable power station needs to switch.
But while the entertainment Inverter generator may turn on the TV and a few lights for 8 to 13 hours on a tank of gas, you will see 3 to 9 hours of power, in the same case, a portable power station is used.
For example, you won't be able to run your power-
The well pump is filled. 2.
In our tests, they take a while to charge, and most of these models take hours to charge (
Usually overnight)
Provide you with the full battery and maximum running time. So—
Suppose you fill the battery with electricity before the predicted weather event-
Portable power stations can give you hours of power to run a refrigerator or other basic equipment.
But Trezza points out that once the battery is out of power, there is no way to charge it if you don't have electricity and there is no sun. 3.
If you are dealing with power outages or you are not in the grid, charging with solar panels can be difficult and long, charging the power station through solar panels is your only option --
There are no obstacles as long as you have a good sun.
In our tests, we found that solar panels can increase the running time, but for larger appliances it may only take an extra hour or two. 4.
They are not as big as the average microwave, but they are quite heavy --
Most of our tests weigh more than 80 pounds.
This means you may need an extra pair of hands to carry one into the trunk of your car.
Some models have wheels, but not all of them are large, making it difficult to roll them on the lawn. 5.
The cost of the portable power stations we tested was between $1,500 and $3,500, but they did not decrease.
Our best portable gas generator is cheaper than the worst portable power station.
Before purchasing these power stations, consider whether a portable generator can provide you with better service.
If there is a power outage, you can continue to add fuel, and portable generators usually provide enough power to keep the larger equipment running.
