Toshiba is almost bankrupt in the United States, so it decided last year to withdraw from building a new factory in Moorside, Cumbria.
But then another Japanese company, Hitachi, decided that it should also choose to act cautiously rather than bravely: last week, it decided to abandon a project at Wylfa in angleshi, abandon the second reactor at Oldbury in Severn. Some £2.
5 billion has been written off due to Hitachi's participation, so these things are not cheap.
However, nakaki Nakanishi, chairman of the group, said that his company would only re-engage when the project was off its balance sheet and would require limited capital investment, and provide enough profit prospects.
As a clear sponsor, the government decided not to participate further.
Britain's nuclear industry is a mess.
It took 13 years for successive governments to develop a nuclear policy, and after years of debate, six nuclear power plants were finally selected.
The idea is that private contractors, not the government, should take risks and build factories.
But contractors are cautious about it, and they are becoming more cautious as prices for renewable energy plummet.
Three of the six sites were abandoned, two
Ceszwell and Bradwell in Suffolk and Essex
Final determination remains to be made.
Only one, point C of Hinkley Point in Somerset is in progress, at least arguably controversial.
Hinkley is likely to be abandoned and we will not build any more large factories, but the government is still sticking to its policies, so it may take a few years, or a general election.
However, the cost of renewable energy is falling rapidly, and environmental activists say the new power storage system still to be developed will eventually close the gap when the wind is insufficient.
We haven't been there yet, though.
But there is another option, though not something that the Greens like, which is a small modular reactor. Rolls-
Royce has been building and maintaining power plants that drive nuclear power plants.
At least from the age of 60, the British power submarine began to play a deterrent role.
Today, it is the country's largest employer of nuclear scientists and engineers with a range of expertise that only a few countries in the world match.
It touches on a good idea to develop similar products using this expertise --
Small nuclear power plants that can be manufactured in factories, transported by truck, are used to generate enough electricity to power cities such as Leeds.
It sees a huge opportunity to gain world leadership in an emerging technology that could export more than £ 100 billion from 2030.
It argues that these units offer a practical alternative to large plants like Hinkley, as they are so large and complex that they are almost always one-
Off that matches the cost.
In contrast, SMRs will be a design with standardized components that benefit from the factory
Based on mass production, the standardized economy will surpass the economies of scale.
The country has promised to be a lowcarbon economy.
The Company believes that its SMRs will be lower than building a large new nuclear power plant to provide safe and reliable
In order to achieve this goal, the country will need a carbon power base.
This will also be timely, which is important given the small reserve capacity in the UK power generation industry.
However, since this technology requires government funding, this requires a radical change in the way Whitehall operates, which is simply not possible.
It requires a commitment from the government to support UK intellectual property, advanced manufacturing and long-term industrial policiesterm high-
Value employment opportunities in the UK.
It requires the government to provide resources for permission and security
The assessment plan can go smoothly and eliminate the risk of the whole project being delayed endlessly.
It will take longer.
Think in terms in the form of a commitment to purchase at least seven plants in order to roll-
Royce has access to economies of scale in manufacturing, which is crucial to reducing costs.
It requires the government to be willing to provide corresponding funds during the development phase of the project.
Finally, it needs the support of the government to help the company fully develop its export market.
Needless to say, the government refused to do so and rolled-
As a result, Royce was no longer speculative about getting ready to invest its own money and suspended the project.
So we won't have a small nuclear reactor except for our submarine.
