electric car battery-maker gets $17m from ontario - lithium batteries for sale

The company, which makes batteries for electric vehicles, will receive $17 million from the Ontario government to expand its business.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Dalton McGinty will announce funding at Electrovaya headquarters outside Toronto, which is expected to create 240 new jobs for the company.
Electrovaya is a producer of lithium.

Last month, McGuinty announced a $10,000 rebate for people buying electric cars, a move that critics warn could actually hinder the next generation of cars.

Among hybrid and battery electric vehicles, rebates for vehicles purchased after July 1, 2010 range from $4,000 to $10,000.
An auto industry analyst said the government bought electric cars by "bribing consumers" to indirectly shift resources from other more promising technologies.
A study by Columbia University in the UK found that the government's rebate on hybrid cars did not produce the expected environmental effects.
