The basic business dedicated to reducing pollution from shipping around the world is bringing benefits back to Canada.
But is that enough for the industry to use clean energy?
Andrewmorden, CEO of Corvusenergy, said: "We are very happy that our products are deployed locally for the first time . " Corvusenergy produces all-hybrid lithium-ion batteries powered by large and small vessels
We did the same thing. for ships]
Everything Tesla does for cars . "
The company's batteries are currently being used on 35 ships in northern Europe and have recently received investments from Norway's largest offshore oil company, Norwegian national petroleum.
Soon, batteries will also be used for ships on the west coast of Canada.
SeaSpanhas has signed a contract for two hybrid freight ferries, and the andMordensaid BC Ferry is also considering the use of the technology.
One of the company's hybrid systems has led to a 20 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, Morton said.
This is particularly encouraging, he said, because most large ships are driven by diesel, which produces more fine particles than gasoline.
"In the shipping industry, reducing emissions is definitely the focus, because it is really important globally," Morden said . ".
More incentives are needed at ChangeRobert L
Evans, author of cheer for our future: an introduction to sustainable energy, agrees that lithium batteries are a very clean source of energy.
But he said it would not be enough to get the industry to start using clean technology.
"The problem is that the energy density of fossil fuels is very high and the cost is relatively low," Evans said . ".
"If you don't have a price for carbon, people will go there.
They need some motivation to do something else.
There are only three sources of energy in the world: fossil fuel, renewable energy and nuclear energy, Evans said.
He says electricity in the world is now coming from fossil fuels.
In particular, diesel engines are 20 to 30 percentage points more efficient than gasoline, which is why they are often used for heavy industrial purposes, Evans said.
But he pointed out that the automotive industry can get power through lithium batteries.
While cars like Tesla are too expensive for ordinary consumers, other cars like theChevrolet Volt have begun to use hybrid technology to provide consumers with more economy, he said
Evans also called for attention to B. C.
He said the carbon tax is effective in reducing emissions.
"If you send a strong enough price signal to the industry, they will start looking for other alternatives," he said . ".
