Earlier this year, due to a huge $4 billion debt, Sanjeev Gupta saved the struggling Arrium steelworks when Whyalla entered voluntary management.
Now, according to advertisers, the British billionaire has promised
Renewable energy scale projects in South Australia, including 100MWh lithium-
The ion battery will be built in Port Augusta, close to the now closed North power station and will be plugged into the 275kV Davenport connection.
It is said that the price of the battery itself is about $100 million and will be put into use in 2019.
Gupta yesterday revealed the $0. 7 billion plan, the first time ZEN has held a board meeting since GFG gained a controlling stake last month.
Outgoing ZEN chairman Ross Garnaut said the battery was "very similar in size" as part of the state government's energy program, with Elon Musk and his Tesla company in Jamestown
Other projects approved by the ZEN board are 200 MW solar PV in Whyalla, of which 80 MW will be in the industrial zone in Whyalla, the remaining projects have a 100 MW "demand response" for whyalla and other industrial sites on the adjacent land owned by GFG ".
These projects are expected to start and run in early 2019.
The development of 120 MW/600MWh pumping water and electricity in an abandoned iron ore mine within the center-back range is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
Additional 480 MW solar capacity will be installed "in due course" to support the industrial capacity of Whyalla and the expansion of industrial loads elsewhere in SA.
