Due to the advantages of high energy density and high operating voltage, lithium-ion batteries have become the mainstream technology for alternative energy storage and vehicles power systems.
The battery in the general sense is composed of three parts: positive electrode, negative electrode and electrolyte. Since lithium metal can react violently with air and water, and its activity is extremely high, it needs to be embedded in other materials to maintain stability. At present, the negative electrode of most lithium ion batteries is mostly composed of carbon-based materials, such as graphite.
The ratio of positive electrode materials is diverse, and different battery manufacturers have "recipes". This is also the reason why there are many kinds of lithium ion batteries on the market.
For example, the three mainstream lithium-ion batteries currently include: lithium nickel cobalt manganese (NMC) batteries favored by most traditional car companies such as BMW and Nissan, lithium nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries that Tesla admires exclusively. Considering the working environment of the battery is changeable and complicated, battery stability and safety become extremely important, and with the long-service-life feature, lithium iron phosphate batteries(LFP) is working as the most common type of lithium battery in the market. Tesla recently announced that Tesla's battery will "remove cobalt." What this company has to do is to change the composition of the battery's positive electrode material.
